Early Years

The Early Years team at Bishops Waltham Infant School foster a love of learning by developing children's abilities, skills, knowledge, fascinations and interests.

The curriculum is planned to enable children to learn through adult led and child initiated activities in the classrooms, continuous provision areas, outdoor learning zones and the local area. Opportunities are planned to provide purposeful enhancements that further extend children's ability to use, apply and consolidate what has been learned.

We want our children in early years to know that everyone matters every day.

They will achieve this through

  • feeling happy, safe and secure

  • behaving well

  • being healthy

  • having a sense of belonging

  • developing a positive self image

  • becoming independent learners

  • playing and exploring

  • being an active learner

  • being creative

  • developing the skills to become a critical thinker

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (Year R) is delivered through the following key areas.

Prime areas are fundamental, work together, and move through to support development in all other areas.

§           Personal, Social and Emotional Development,

§           Communication and Language

§           Physical Development

Specific areas include essential skills and knowledge for children to participate successfully in society.

§           Literacy

§           Mathematics

§           Understanding the World

§           Expressive Arts and Design

In Year R, there is a project for each half term but we also work from children's own interests and needs. There is a big emphasis on learning outdoors and what is being learnt inside is replicated in the outdoor environment.
