Axles

An axle is the mechanism that makes a wheel turn. There are lots of different types of axles. Some turn while the wheels stay still and others stay still while the wheels turn around the axle. Look at the photos below to see some examples.

If you have any toy vehicles at home, try and see how the wheel turns.

Your wheeled vehicle will need to be functional, so the wheels must be able to turn. Think about how you will do this and draw a labelled design for the axle you will use.

Mock ups

When designing and making a product, it is important to create a mock up (a practise version). We want our wheeled vehicles to be functional, so we want you to make a mock up, so we know if it will work. Use recycled objects from home and think carefully about the materials you choose remembering our learning from last week.
