Silver Fern Sketches

This week we will be learning the difference between drawing and sketching and using our creativity to create a pencil sketch of a Silver Fern.

Did you know the silver fern is very important to New Zealanders? This is because it symbolises lots of different things. To Māori, the shape of the leaves stands for strength, resistance, and power. To Pākehā (New Zealanders of non-Māori descent), the fern symbolises their sense of attachment to their homeland.

Did you know the All Blacks, New Zealand's famous rugby team, have the silver fern as their emblem?

Here are some silver ferns for you to look at.

With an adult, you could research some silver ferns to choose one you wish to sketch or you can sketch one of these. You can click on each picture to make it bigger.

Sketching Silver Ferns

Mrs Moth shows the difference between drawing and sketching. Don't forget to send in your silver fern sketches!

Here are some examples of silver fern sketches.

Can you see the detail that has carefully been added into each of the pieces of art?
