Phonics

Live Phonics Teaching Session

Please remember to be on Zoom for 13.00 on Wednesday the 20th, where your teachers will recap and introduce the sounds to practise for the week.

This week we will be focusing on applying the sounds 'sh', 'ch', and 'th' in our reading and writing. Have a look at the activities below for ideas on how to apply these sounds in your reading and writing.

Remember to recap the all the other sounds we have learnt so far using the PowerPoints below or the flash cards in your phonics pack

Below is a guide for what to focus on each day. In school, we will also spend a couple of minutes each day recapping all the sounds that have been taught so far.

Monday  -  Applying the 'ch' sound

Tuesday  -  Applying 'sh' sound

Wednesday  -  Live Zoom phonic session

Thursday  -  Applying the 'th' sound

Friday - Recap all sounds from this week.

CVC/VC Activities

If your child is practising to stretch their words to hear more sounds in order to create VC or CVC words, the please look at the activities below.

Reading

Busy Things For your reading activity, have a go at the 'Buried Treasure' activity under 'Blending for Reading'. These can be found by clicking on 'Literacy, Communication and Language', followed by 'Phonics Programme', and then 'Phases, 2, 3 and 4, Basic Letters and Sounds'.

Digraph Detectives

We would like you to be digraph detectives again this week! Can you read the story and spot the words with the 'ch' sound in them? I wonder how many you will be able to spot...

Print the sheet below and highlight the 'ch' words. Alternatively, you could write a list of all the words with the 'ch' sound that you can find!

Writing

For this activity, we would like you to colour in the pictures that have a 'ch' sound in them and write the word underneath!

Please click on the link below to complete the following 'ch' writing activity. If you do not have access to a printer at home, please write the answers straight into your blended learning book.

Stick the correct pictures in the book. Can you write the word underneath?

Phonics Hangman!

To practise applying the 'sh' sound in your reading, we would like you to play a game of phonics hangman! Get your grown ups to think of a word beginning or ending in  'sh'. Guess which letters/sounds are in their word (hint - one will always be sh!) Then, segment and blend the sounds to read the word and win the point!

Here are some ideas for words you could use:

Unscramble the Letters

For your writing activity, we would like you to unscramble the 'sh' words by clicking on the worksheet below. If you do not have a printer at home, please write your answers in your blended learning book. Maybe you could even draw a picture next to your answers!

'th' Sound Activities

Reading

Eat your sounds!

Write a list of words with the 'th' sound on a sheet of paper. Space the letter-sounds out on your sheet of paper so that there is enough room to place a smartie/sweet underneath each. For the 'th' digraph, draw a line underneath and place the smartie below it. The line is to show that although there are two letters, they make one sound. Your child's job is to say the sound above each smartie, blend them together, and read the word to win the sweets!

This activity can be adapted i.e. you can use playdough sound buttons instead of sweets! Instead, your child would squish the sound button to read the word. For digraph sounds, roll the playdough into a coil shape to show that 'th' is one sound.

Missing Word Sentences

For this activity, read the sentence to figure out the missing 'th' word (your grown ups may have to read the sentence clues for you). Use your sounds to help you find the correct word and write it in the space below!

Please click on the link below for the worksheet. Alternatively, number and write your answers in your blended learning book.
