Phonics Resources

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read. In Year R children are taught to:

- recognise the sounds (phonemes) that each individual letter of the alphabet makes

- identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make

 - blend these sounds together to read and segment for spelling.

It is important that the pure sounds of letters and combinations of letters are pronounced correctly. Avoid trying to say an ‘uh’ at the end of the sound. So you would say 'mmmm' not ‘muh’.
