Sustainability
OUR VISION FOR SUSTAINABILITY AT BWIS
We want our children to be guardians of our planet, live sustainable lives and embrace change with positivity, flexibility and resilience. Above all, our children will need to be the decision makers of our future. Climate change is beginning to impact our lives in many ways. We see examples of extreme weather diminishing natural resources and increases in migration and food shortage. These are issues that will confront our children as they grow into adults leading sustainable lives. They will need to question information that is biased, incorrect or even false, to make up their minds about the world. As they encounter the rich learning across the curriculum, there will be numerous chances to explore the complexity of climate change and sustainability in practical ways, forming their own views and pledging to make a difference
Meet our BADGER Climate Crew
EARTH DAY 2026
Our school came together to celebrate Earth Day 2026 with an exciting, action-packed day. The day began with a whole-school assembly, where children were introduced to our inspiring Climate Crew and the four special missions they would be completing throughout the day.
There was a real buzz of excitement as the missions were revealed, with children eager to begin their journey as young environmental champions. Each mission encouraged teamwork, creativity, and a deeper understanding of how we can all make a difference to our planet.
After the assembly, classes returned to their classrooms to begin their first mission.
Early Years (Year R)
Year R had great fun exploring how to dress for different types of weather, making sure they chose the correct clothing for each situation they were shown. You can clearly see from the photos just how much fun they had! They also created some wonderful wild seed bombs, which they were excited to share with their families and have since placed around the school grounds to help encourage wildlife and support our local environment. In addition, the children took part in our Recycling Ranger Challenge, carefully sorting different types of rubbish into the correct bins and learning why recycling is so important. As part of their Watt Watcher mission, they explored how we use energy around school, adding red, orange or green stickers to switches to show whether they could be turned off to help save power.
Year 1
Our Year 1 children started by becaming Recycling Rangers and went to the hall to sort different types of rubbish. They carefully placed items into the correct hula hoops, learning how to recycle properly and why it is important. Next, they turned into Wildlife Warriors and created their own bird feeders. Some children used old bottles, decorating them and cutting holes to add bird seed, while others used lard and seeds on toilet roll tubes for birds to enjoy. Keep an eye out for these around the school and on our nature walk!
The children then became Climate Commanders, where they learned about the difference between weather and climate. They discovered that weather changes day to day, while climate happens over a long period of time, and sorted statements into the correct categories. Finally, as Watt Watchers, the children helped to save energy by adding stickers to light switches in their classrooms, reminding everyone to turn off the lights when they are not needed.
Year 2
Our Year 2 children started as Watt Watchers, they added stickers to the switches in their classroom and hall to remind everyone to save energy. The children then became Wildlife Warriors, creating bee houses by decorating old tins and filling them with bamboo sticks to provide a safe space for bees.
As Climate Commanders, they explored the difference between weather and climate, learning that weather is short-term while climate changes over a long period of time. They also discussed how climates may be changing due to climate change. Finally they took on the role of Recycling Rangers, heading to the hall to sort rubbish into the correct place and learning how to use packaging to help them.
At the end of such an exciting day, the whole school came together for a special assembly. Each class shared a promise about how they will help take care of the Earth and become more sustainable. It was a lovely way to finish the day and think about how we can all make a difference.

Our Top Tips To Try At Home:
💡 Save Energy
Turn off lights when leaving a room — make it a “last one out wins” game.
Unplug chargers when not in use — they still use a little power even when nothing’s charging.
🚰 Use Water Wisely
- Turn off taps while brushing your teeth or soaping hands.
♻️ Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
- Reuse containers for crafts, storage, or planting seeds.
- Swap toys or books with others instead of buying new ones.
🌍 Care for Nature
Plant pollinator‑friendly flowers or herbs in pots or gardens.
Feed birds responsibly with seeds or fat balls.
We would love to know what you try at home! Remember any change can make a difference.
