Important Update
Sun 28 Nov 2021Many of you may have watched the update from the government on Saturday, regarding the new omicron variant of COVID-19 in the UK. Today we have had advice from the DFE, for all staff to go back to mask wearing in communal areas.
Firstly, I would like to reassure you of the measures that are currently in place in school. We have 3 assembly times where Year 1 and 2 are together, with a space between them. At all other times, children are only mixing with children in the same year group. We fog all classrooms every day. Staff regularly clean touch points and tables throughout the day. Children use hand sanitiser on entry to classrooms and regular hand washing takes place. The library is open to one year group per day. We will take advice from the DFE when issued, if we need to further strengthen these measures.
As an extra safety measure, to help keep adults safe at drop off and pick up, we request that face masks are worn again, and to keep 2m from the classroom doors. We would really appreciate it if everyone can do this from tomorrow morning(Monday 29th November). One adult per child group/family is still in place too. We hope with these extra measures we can try to keep our school community safer.

Children In Need
Fri 19 Nov 2021We have had a fantastic Children In Need day. Thank you for your generous donations and for your children's super fancy dress outfits. We raised £261 and had fun working out with Joe Wicks!

Our New Imaginative Shelters Have Arrived
Wed 17 Nov 2021Our two imaginative play shelters have arrived and look fabulous! One is in the Early Years Area and one is on the large playground. Lots of role play and learning will take place in these and we can't wait to get started.
We have put together an Amazon wish list of things we would like to stock them with in order for cafe/shop role play. If anyone would like to purchase any of the items on the list, please click the link below. All items would be gratefully received.
Our outdoor libraries are still being made and will arrive soon, we have enough books to stock both libraries.
Thank you again for all the children who took part in our sponsored walk in the Summer term and to the families who gave so generously, so that we could buy the shelters and libraries. Everyone at BWIS is very grateful.

What's happening this week?

We are continuing to strengthen the key life skill of reading in school and the importance of practising reading, when at home. The more children read, or are read to, the more vocabulary they are learning and becoming exposed to. Children always have a book available to practise the phonics they are learning in school in the form of a real book or on 'Bug Club', and we have invested a further £1500 to further support phonics in school and at home. For early readers, it is important to keep practising their phonic sounds and sound out words. We have been looking in the reading diaries and lots of you are practising every day. Thank you so much in supporting your children's learning this way
National Anti-Bullying Week
In line with national 'Anti-Bullying Week' , this week our assembly focus has been on what to do if someone has said or done something to you that is unkind, or has upset you. We read a story about a little boy who had lots of worries, and that talking about about his worries with a trusted grownup will help make worries seem smaller. Bullying is seen as repeated unkindness, whether it be words or actions. We talked about the effects of repeated 'teasing' , and if somebody is saying something that makes them feel sad or upset to voice that by telling them how it is making them feel. Bullying in any shape or form will not be tolerated at our school, and our staff are always here to help and advise with any situation.
We hope, by giving children the chance to talk about the stories we read in our assembly time, they gain confidence to speak. out when something is upsetting them and not bottling it up. Often, small children do not understand that they are saying something that could be upsetting. All the children from Year R to Year 2 gave me a big wave when I asked if they would tell a grown up if something was upsetting them, and there were happy smiles all round.

Children in Need Day-Friday 19th November
This Friday is 'Children in Need' day. Mrs Charles has organised a fancy dress day with the School Council, with a suggested donation of £1. Children can dress up, any way they would like, and fancy dress could be as simple as non-school uniform. An app message was sent last week with a few more details and we will be collecting on the way into school, so please have pennies at the ready.
Save the Date- A special Christmas evening to remember Thursday 9th December
Due to the continuing effects of Covid, we are have looked at ways we can include parents and grandparents in our celebration of Christmas in a safe way, at the lowest risk to everyone. We would like to invite parents and grandparents to our outdoor Christmas Celebration Evening on Thursday 9th December. Doors will open at 5.30pm and we will need all the children ready for 6pm start. Food and drink will be available to purchase and some stalls to browse whilst waiting for our performance, which will all be orgaised by our fabulous PTA. We will be singing known songs and carols, and parents are very welcome to join in. The event will be lit up and we hope it will be a special evening to remember for our whole school community. We will also record the songs and poems in school for children who will be unable to attend.
Poppy Collection
Nearly all our poppies were sold this year, and we held our special assembly to commemorate the day. We also held a two minute silence throughout the school at 11 o'clock on the 11/11. Our children asked lots of questions and many told us about people in their family who were the forces at the time, or are in the forces now. Thank you to everybody who donated, and to our super Poppy Collection Volunteers.

Behaviour in School
Mon 08 Nov 2021Dear Parents and Carers
We have had a few new children join us, since the start to term, and I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on the children's behaviour in our school, which is excellent! The children are polite and kind to each other and this has shown when welcoming the newer children. Children tell us they feel safe in school and to tell an adult if they are worried (sometimes they need reminding about this and we give the children lots of opportunities to talk).
In our assemblies, the children listen and are engaged. They enjoy coming together to listen to a story or information about famous people in history, scientists, people who are important now. We also talk about our 6 BADGER values and link to them whenever we can. We take assemblies as an opportunity to reflect on the 4 British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect and Tolerance and Individual Liberty at a level young children can understand.
This week's assemblies reflect on why we have a Remembrance day every year. We will also be learning about 'Children in Need' day which is on 19th November. At home your children may talk abut some of the things we are discussing, as they try to make sense of the world around them. They will be forming their own ideas, and learning to develop their own personal values in life.
I am going to put a special mention in our 'Special Mentions' book this week about our wonderful caring children and their superb behaviour, that makes our school such a special place to learn in and I wanted to share this with you all. This doesn't happen by accident and thank you for continuing to strengthen our values at home too.

Parking near a school
Thu 04 Nov 2021We have had a complaint today about the lack of visibility on approach to the school whilst crossing over. 4 cars were parked on the yellow zigzag lines this morning. The Highway code is very clear about not parking near a school entrance:
" Rule 243, you should not park near a school entrance — as well as anywhere that would prevent access for emergency services, at or near a bus stop, opposite or within 10 metres of a junction, over a dropped kerb, and in front of an entrance to a property."

Yellow zig-zag lines outside schools indicate the length of road where stopping or waiting is strictly prohibited. You may also find an upright sign, indicating a mandatory prohibition of stopping during the times shown.
These rules are for SAFETY. With more children attending school and the volume of traffic using the estate, it is imperative that cars are not blocking the visibility to pedestrians outside our school. A few weeks ago, we informed you of what happened to an elderly resident when a dropped kerb was blocked by a car. We will now be working with the local police regarding car owners who are creating a risk to the safety of the children attending our school. Please consider how you would feel if your negligence caused a serious injury or worse to a small child, and park responsibly.

September 2022 Admissions
Tue 02 Nov 2021If you would like to have a look around our school site before submitting your application on the Hampshire County Council Admissions portal. Two dates have been added for parents to have a look around the outside of the school in November.
If you would like to book an appointment, please contact the school office. The time slots are 9:30am, 11:15am or 1:15pm.

Welcome Back
Tue 02 Nov 2021Welcome back everybody! It was lovely to see everybody wrapped up warm on our chilly start back today. We started selling poppies and will be learning about remembrance in our assembly next week. Please bring some money in if you would like your child to have a poppy. They will come around the classrooms each morning.
Our assembly today was all about the gunpowder plot and firework safety. Please have a look at the firework code poster in our 'Gunpowder Plot Learning Links' page. Your child may want to share it with you.

There was also an email sent out about our Parent Teacher meetings this month. These will be virtual appointments where teachers will discuss your child's progress. Please look in your inbox for information on how to book.
It was lovely to see so many children complete our reading challenge! Bookmarks will be coming out at the end of the week, when all our names have been counted.
Lastly, all clubs start back from today. there is still room in some of our clubs-our amazing yoga club definitely has some extra spaces. Please contact the school office for information on how to book.
