Weekly Update- Friday 31st March
Fri 31 Mar 2023Dear Parents and Carers
What a busy week we have had this week! Year 1 made smoothies for Year R children to try as their learning outcome. Year R were busy beavers, planting around our school and Year 2 have been amazing writers and mathematicians.
We learned about the Easter story in Assembly this week, and the children were full of curiosity about the different events in the story. Our PTA worked tirelessly to organise our Easter Egg hunt and the weather was very kind to us this year! Have a peek at some of the pictures below:
We held our Annual Easter Competition in the hall, with lots and lots of entries. Our two judges this year were Judy Marsh and Tracy Conduct from the Parish Council. They were very impressed by the creativity and hard work that went into all the hats. There were 14 main prizes per class and everyone had an egg for entering. Pictures of all the hats are here:

We have had a great time this week drawing our Royal portraits for the Children in Need 'Royally Big Portrait'. Parents will need to upload their pictures by April 21st, and details and portraits have been sent home this week. Don't worry if you lose your details as they can also be found here

The standard of our portraits are very high, and you can find a few below.
We also have exciting news this holiday-Miss Campbell is getting married! We wish her and Sam all the best from everyone at BWIS. When Miss Campbell returns, her new name will be Mrs Withers (I'm sure Owl Class will remember it by the end of the summer!)
And that brings us to the end of Spring Term. We wish all our families a lovely Easter break and look forward to seeing you in the Summer Term.
Best Wishes

PCSO Sarah and the School Council
Wed 29 Mar 2023Today, PCSO Sarah came to school to look at parking outside school with the School Council. The School Council came in early, put their high vis vests on and stood with Sarah to check that no-one was parking on the double yellow lines or zig-zags.
Sadly, there were some cars that pulled up on the zig-zags right in front of PCSO Sarah and the School Council and Sarah had to speak to them and give the driver one of the special parking notices designed by children at Bishops Waltham Infant School. The School Council couldn’t believe that adults would put children in danger by doing this!
The School Council are going to make Sarah some new signs and meet with her again after the Easter holidays.

Weekly Update Friday 24th March
Wed 22 Mar 2023Dear Parents and Carers
We have had a busy week this week in our classes. As signs of spring are all around us, they have appeared indoors too! Year R have been busy planting and growing, and their gardens they have made for home learning are very inventive! Have a little peek at them here:
Year 2 have been busy making their games and learning facts about Lord Nelson. Their Learning Outcome was fantastic today and I loved playing their games- what a creative Year 2 you are! Take a look at some of the fabulous games here:
Our PTA have been at the front gate selling tickets for our Easter Egg hunt on Thursday 29th March. We have one eye on the weather at the moment, as the year we did our hunt in the heavy rain was not fun for the children (or the parents). If there are any changes to the date/time we will give plenty of notice.
Year 1 have been working with Year R on designing some fruit smoothies, according to Year R's fruit likes. Year R are looking forward to the outcomes next week!
This year there is an exciting opportunity for your child's art to join hundred's of other children's artwork for the coronation of King Charles run by Children in Need. We will send out the parent letters on how to upload next week, and the information about this can be found here
Children in Need's Royally Big Portrait 2023
It was our penultimate week of lunchtime clubs this week. All the teachers have had great fun running their clubs for Year 2 children again this year. My lego club had great fun following instructions this week and can’t wait to bring them home next week. To find out more about the Lunchtime Clubs that have run this year for Year 2, click the link below:
I look forward to seeing our parent quizzers this evening, and wish you all a lovely weekend.
Best wishes

Weekly Update Friday 17th March
Fri 17 Mar 2023Dear Parents and Carers
We monitored maths across the school this week, and observed high quality teaching and task design supporting children’s understanding of maths. All the children spoke positively about the maths they were doing and were happy to share their learning. Looking through the books, there was clear evidence of the tasks being adapted to the needs of the learners, with evidence of support and extension too. Well done to all of our teachers who clearly enjoy teaching maths and have excellent subject knowledge in this area.
Thank you to our staff who have dug over our vegetable beds ready for planting and cleared our potting shed. They look great and are all ready for our classes to plant now Spring is coming.
Our Red Nose Day celebration this year was organised by our School Council members who voted for non uniform. The children had a great day showing off their style to their friends. Thank you to everyone who have contributed to our Red Nose Charity page.
Our PTA have been really busy organising the quiz and our Easter Egg hunt in the last week of March. Remember our Easter Bonnet competition is on the last day of term too.
If anybody has some time to cover our extra home phonic reading books in sticky back plastic, please come and let me know. We have a few packs left to do before we can give them out.
Thank you for the frogspawn donations for the Year R classes. It is always an awe and wonder moment when they start to change and grow legs. The children love watching the changes over the weeks.
This weekend is the last weekend of the rugby 6 Nations tournament. Congratulations to Ireland who look like they will be winning the tournament and happy St Patrick’s day too. Our children enjoyed finding out about Irish traditions and food in Assembly this week. Better luck next time to our other home nations.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend.
Best wishes

Weekly Update Friday 10th March
Wed 08 Mar 2023Dear Parents and Carers
This week we had our special Winter Warmer evening for Year 1 children. Miss Apsey and the staff made the evening really special for the children and parents. Thank you to everyone who came. There is an article and links to photos on an earlier post on this page.
Our new outdoor classroom/playtime reflection area is built, and looks super! We are still landscaping around it, ready for it to be used in the summer, along with our redeveloped pond area, which has been attracting lots of wildlife. Take a look at the link below to see all our lovely learning areas outdoors at BWIS.
Tickets for our Easter Egg hunt and PTA quiz are on sale from our PTA. Both events are very popular and we hope to see you there.
Thank you to the parents who have donated Easter Egg prizes for our Easter Bonnet competition. It is held on the last day of term in the school hall, and open to all children.
Our reading raffle is very popular and the extra reading is developing greater fluency in our readers. Thank you to everybody who is continuing to keep up the three reading sessions with their children every week.
Remember our ‘Special Mentions’ book and ‘Achievement’ book are at the front of the school. The children love having their names read out and see their achievements being celebrated. We love seeing everything they do too.
An email has been sent to all parents regarding the planned industrial action by the NEU next week. Please check your Arbour emails for details.
Wishing you all a lovely (not too cold) weekend.
Best wishes

Winter Warmer Evening
Wed 08 Mar 2023We had a lovely Winter Warmer evening this week for our Year 1 children. Everyone came back to school in their pyjamas and after making badges and bookmarks (whilst Miss Apsey talked through reading strategies with parents), snuggled for story time with their parents. Every teacher stayed to help make the evening a memorable one, and Mrs Riches read a story to finish.
Thank you to the parents who have write to us to say thank you. It means a lot to all staff, and we are glad you enjoyed the event. Please find a link to some pictures from the evening here:

Weekly Update Friday 3rd March
Fri 03 Mar 2023Dear Parents and Carers
What a super week of learning we have had this week. Today the children were really excited to share their favourite books and swap classrooms to listen to different teachers reading stories.
On Wednesday our Year 1 children had a Victorian experience in school. Everybody dressed up and the classrooms looked very different. Some of the boys told me they had swept a chimney that morning! Mrs Moth and Miss Beckley looked very different too. The children were especially pleased when the parents joined them for their learning outcome. What a memorable day for them to treasure.
Year 2 had an exciting day on Wednesday too, when they visited HMS Victory. They came back full of facts, that they have enjoyed sharing with us. They are really enjoying this project project and their classrooms look fantastic. Thank you to all adults who led and helped on the trip, and we hope you thawed out when you got home!
Parent/Teacher meetings were at the start of the week, and it was lovely for us to share your children's learning with you. The children are very proud of their books, and rightly so. If you didn't manage to come in on Monday and Tuesday and would like to meet with your child's teacher, please make an appointment to see them.
We have had a cold weather warning for Hampshire for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Mrs Ely will check on the building on the weekend, but please make sure your children are wrapped up warm, especially Year R who are on their school trip on Monday. If it snows, we will let you know school arrangements as soon as we can.
Year 1 have their Winter Warmer on Tuesday evening. We have had reply slips back from 23 parents saying that their child is attending (closing date for reply slips is today). Please let school know if your child would like to attend before Tuesday. Miss Apsey and the teachers are looking forward to seeing you.
We looked at welsh culture and tradition for St David's Day in assembly this week. The videos we shared are on 'learning links' on the children's pages. The children learned how to say 'Good Morning' in welsh ('Bore da'). They also learned about the 'Eisteddfod', which is a celebration competition of song, dance and poetry in Wales.
Bishops Waltham Cricket Club opened their bookings for 'All Stars' this week. An email will be sent out to everybody, and the link to book is here:
https://ecb.clubspark.uk/AllStars/Course/2aa0e88f-c3fa-4de3-ad43-54be53391757
Our PTA Quiz night tables are starting to be booked up. Please see the PTA if you would like to come along.
We are giving lots of notice for our Easter Bonnet Competition on the last day of term (Friday 31st March). There are always lots of entries and very creative hats are made! Judging will be in Year groups, and we can't wait to see the designs.
Our PTA Easter Egg hunt tickets are also on sale for Thursday 30th March, where children have a bag to decorate, mini eggs to find and a big Easter egg at the end-and maybe a visit from the Easter Bunny himself!
Our outdoor learning/playtime quiet area is going up quickly. Once finished we, will be planting in the area too. We are also adding to the story area, to make a magical place for our children. There are a few pictures below, showing the progress so far.
Wishing you all a warm weekend.
Best wishes

World Book Day
Tue 28 Feb 2023Dear parent and carers,
This year, we will be celebrating World Book Day on Friday 3rd March.
We will not be dressing up as a celebration!
Instead, we are asking each child to bring one of their favourite books into school. They will have opportunities to share this with their friends and teachers throughout the day.
In school, the children will have the opportunity to choose which book they would like to hear read to them. Each teacher will be reading a book in their classroom and the children will sign up to the one they would like to hear.
Thank you for your support and don’t forget to look out for World Book Day book vouchers!
Best wishes,
Miss Apsey and Miss Turner

Weekly Update Friday 24th February
Thu 23 Feb 2023Dear Parents and Carers
We have had a great start back to school, and the fine weather has meant the children have been able to be outside every playtime. Lots of lovely learning has gone on in the classrooms and the children have enjoyed telling us about their half term break and news.
The new road markings have been painted around our school. Traffic enforcement officers will be coming to the area more regularly, and tickets will be issued, so please make sure you are parked legally for the safety of all our pupils when arriving and leaving school.
The majority of parents have signed up for parent/teacher meetings on Monday and Tuesday. We will have a staffed room for children and siblings to go, when parents are attending their appointment. We really look forward to seeing you and sharing their super learning.
World Book Day is next week, which we will be celebrating on Friday with Book activities. Our English Leaders Miss Apsey and Miss Turner, will be letting you know more at the start of next week about the activities we will be doing and we will also have a book fayre operating all week in our school lobby. Please come and browse at the lovely books available. (details on the book fayre is on an earlier 'latest news' post.
Our PTA Quiz night is on Friday 24th March in the school hall. There are 8 to a table, but don't worry if you are a 2 or a 1-we can put you on another table and it is a great way to meet other parents. Everyone is welcome -present and past parents, grandparents, helpers and friends. There will be ale and food supplied by The Hampshire Bowman, so book a table and come along!
Presently, there is still a NEU strike planned for next week (2nd March). It may be paused due to talks with the government (announced on the news this week). We will be open for all classes at BWIS on Thursday 2nd March, confirmed by staff today.
Earlier in the year you may remember the super Hampshire Cricket Coaching we had in Years 1 and 2. We have been asked to circulate information about All Stars Cricket and Dynamos Cricket that will be happening this year in Bishops Waltham. Opening Registration is on 1st March and places fill up quickly. Please find the information below:
All Stars Cricket ([allstarscricket.co.uk]allstarscricket.co.uk) provides a fantastic first experience for all children aged 5-8 years old where they’re guaranteed 8 weeks of jam-packed fun, activity and skills development. The programme is designed to introduce children to the sport, teaching them new skills, helping them make new friends and have a great time doing so. Every child that registers will receive a backpack full of goodies including:
- Cricket bat
- Cricket ball
- Personalised t-shirt with your child’s name
All children returning to All Stars will receive a kit bag, a set of stumps, a new ball and a personalised t-shirt.
Dynamos Cricket ([dynamoscricket.co.uk]dynamoscricket.co.uk) provides a fantastic next step for all those graduating from All Stars Cricket and the perfect introduction for all 8-11 year-olds new to the sport! Complementing junior cricket, Dynamos provides children with a more social offer focused on developing fundamental movement skills and applying them in an exciting game of countdown cricket. We know how important it is to look like the heroes of the game, so every child who registers will receive their very own Dynamos Cricket New Balance t-shirt, personalised with their name and number.
We hope you have a lovely weekend. I will be following the rugby and watching the Wales v England game from behind a cushion on my sofa!
Best wishes
